May, 1997: at the Richard Petty Driving Experience
just outside of Walt Disney World, Orland, FL at the WDW Speedway. Took the
"Rookie Experience" (twice). A 1 mile tri-oval where you drive, following
the instructor around the track for 8 laps. The first time, I followed another
student who was following the Instructor. This guy was slow at first (see times),
and he was about 5 cars behind the instructor (I was about 2 behind this other guy).
We finally picked up a little speed (by that time we were done, and the last lap I
floored it!). Of course I just had to do it again! It was one of those things
you can't try just once. So I went back a couple days later. One of the
instructors recognized me and decided I would follow him alone. I was a little less
than a cars length behind him the whole time (Your supposed to stay 2 cars behind) (Your
also supposed to max out at 120mph) So much for that. He told me I was very good
& kept up with him excellent (then I guess he says that to everyone). He also
told me the next time I try this, to show them my lap times. I'd love to do this
again, but I'm saving up for the advanced course at Charolette or Atlanta.
Definitely a once in a lifetime experience (or more in my case). Highly recommended.
