Lawrence,
Here is what I have from a 1995-96 CD-ROM covering 11 of 45 voivodeships:
Dorota and Henryk Kiewra, Kwiska 14 m 8, 54-210 Wroclaw
Stanislaw Kiewra, Czarnieckiego 5 m 72, 53-650 Wroclaw
Stanislaw Kiewro, Graniczna 6/c m 62, 40-008 Katowice
Stanislaw Kiewro, Pilotow 25, 31-462 Krakow
Dorota Kiewra has a master's in biology, Henryk in rehabilitation, Stanislaw
Kiewra in engineering. The abbreviation "m" is like "Apt."
in English.
My 1998 yellow pages show neither Kiewra nor Kiewro. No grocers, physicians,
architects, etc.
If you want my wife (anesthesiologist from Krakow) and me (subtitler from
Trenton, NJ) to translate a letter into Polish, let us know.
I have not run into "walshmessenger" before.

I'm sorry I couldn't answer your note sooner. I've been horribly busy lately,
and haven't had much time for answering name inquiries. But I did look through
my sources some time ago for information, and found that none of them mentioned
this name. I was waiting for another book to come in, which, I hoped,
might shed some light. But unfortunately, it didn't. So I simply have to admit I
don't have a clue what this name comes from. My gut feeling is that it
might be Ukrainian, but even my Ukrainian sources don't mention it.
The one thing I can tell you is that the name, while not common, is not unknown
in Poland. As of 1990 there were 196 Polish citizens named KIEWRA, and
another 94 named KIEWRO. Neither name showed any particular concentration in one
place, although both seem more common in western Poland, in the areas
formerly ruled by Germany but returned to Poland after World War II. This is
not inconsistent with Ukrainian origin, because after World War II huge numbers
of ethnic Ukrainians were forced to relocate from southeastern Poland
(which used to include much of western Ukraine) to those "recovered
lands" (as the Poles call them) in western Poland. If we had data
from before World War II (but unfortunately we don't), I would make a pretty
sizable bet the name would show up almost exclusively in eastern Poland
and western Ukraine.
I'm sorry I couldn't help more -- you might visit <www.infoukes.com>,
investigate their resources, and see if anyone there can at least confirm
or refute my suspicion that the name is Ukrainian. If it is, who knows, maybe
someone there can tell you something useful... You might also try writing the
Anthroponymic Workshop of the Polish Language Institute -- there's more info in
the introduction to my Webpage at <http://www.pgsa.org/nazw_index.htm>.
Good luck!

Wish I could help, but I only speak English. I used a Germain-English Translator
and will use it to do English-German. Not sure how good it
works. I will try my best.

My grand parents came from Poland in early 1900. We are not sure from
which town or country. My www page is just a collection of family root
information as far back as we can recall to current times. I have been
researching out roots for about one year when I have got free time. I hope this
helps. Thank you for writing.

From: Edward A. Kiewra
To: Larry (and Gus)
My side of the family had a reunion this past weekend, and it gave me the opportunity to speak with some of my aunts and uncles. My grandfather, Anthony, had two brothers, William and Michael. William was actually a half-brother, the son of Michael and Anthony's step-mother. Here's some information to update your website, under Anthony and Anna Kiewra: Anthony died on 3/20/49 (he wasn't even sure of the year of his birth); Anna was born in 1897 and died on 2/11/79; my father Edward (dates are correct) was married to Josephine (Zduniak) Kiewra (you have Alice from the listing under Michael and Mary) - she was born on 1/31/20 and died on 4/30/79; Edward and Josephine's children are Edward, Virginia, Mary Jean Russo, and Robert. As for my father's siblings, Josephine was married to Vincent Filaski (he died on 3/10/59 - their children are Vincent and Donald. Joseph Kiewra, who died on 10/12/75, was married to Florence Anderson - they have one son, Joseph. Walter Kiewra died on 11/18/72 (was married to Gertrude (don't know her last name), who is also deceased. Francis (Frank) Kiewra is married to Winifred Bleich - they had 3 children, Dard (Winifred's son from a previous marriage - his name was changed to Edward Stagg and he died about 1 ˝ years ago), Diane, and Kenneth. Zigmond (John) Kiewra is married to Arlene Kamm, with two sons Jack and James. Frances Kiewra married William Gleason (who died a few years ago) and they had 3 children, Katherine, Janice, and Kenneth. Jennie Kiewra married Joseph Domanski (deceased), with 2 children (Joseph - deceased) and Ronald. Alexander Kiewra married Sonja Nielsen, with 4 children, Alex, Steven, Gary, and Keith. Lillian Kiewra married Thomas Scurti, with 3 children, Deb (Deborah?), Lori, and Chris (Christine?). There was an 11th child, Mary, who was born in 1917, 1918, or 1919 and died when she was a year old.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Have you made use of any of the genealogical resources of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? The Church's family history centers have access to a wealth of information. I'm interested in finding a hometown/birthplace for my grandfather and grandmother (Anthony and Anna) in Poland (probably Russia at that time). Please let me know if you come across any leads. Thanks and keep in touch.
Ed
